HKPCA 2017 Jan workshop: Beyond Talk Therapy

06/01/2017 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Course Outline 課程大綱

“Talking Cure” has been the major approach in the counselling-psychotherapeutic field. However, one must not undermine the effectiveness of “non-talking” approaches. The use of Multi-sensory Approach had begun to occupy part of the stage since early 20th century. Psychodrama, Art Therapy, Meditation, etc. found their places in the field.

In this workshop, the trainer is going to share Virginia Satir’s multisensory intervention strategy of her Systemic-Holistic-Multisensory Approach in therapy which includes the philosophy behind her choices and some of her specific tools and skills. There will also be hands-on practices.

For Satir, accessing the life energy of each individual and facilitating the connection of all these energies through multisensory experiences were essential principles to enabling growth and health. The family therapy and mental health field are increasingly aware of the powerful impact of spirituality on human experiences. Satir’s Systemic-Holistic-Multisensory approach offers one avenue to consider the spiritual dimension.

Dr Grace YUNG is the Chief Executive and Chief Clinical Supervisor of Green Pastures Whole Person Development Centre. She has served on the educational front for forty years as a teacher, lecturer and school principal. She was honoured with the Hong Kong Outstanding Educators’ Award in 1992. Her career as a counsellor began in a school in 1983 and later serves in a psychiatric setting and in private establishments.  Dr. Yung began practising clinical supervision in 1997. She established the Green Pastures Whole Person Development Centre in 2002. The name of the centre reflects its mission of facilitating individuals, workshop participants and family members to find their own piece of green pasture within their heart and soul.

As an experienced counsellor, family therapist, curriculum developer, teacher and clinical supervisor, Dr Yung has enjoyed good outcomes in every facet of her work. Satir Growth Model has been her counselling orientation and an anchor in her professional and personal development. She is the first scholar to study Satir’s clinical supervision. Her doctoral studies took her to a deeper and broader level of understanding of Satir’s counselling and supervision philosophy, and was considered by all three examiners as filling a significant gap in the evolution of family therapy and the research of clinical supervision.

In the past 30 years, Dr Yung has committed herself to promoting the Satir Growth Model in Hong Kong and around the world. She has been a key leader of the Hong Kong Satir Centre, the first Asian elected as a board member of the Virginia Satir Global Network and the first Asian to be granted the “Living Treasure” award by the Network in 2009. She continues her commitment to promoting and developing growth oriented counselling and supervision philosophy which harmonizes with Chinese culture.
