Course brief:

Our society today places a high premium on academic success and consistency, even though future jobs may require different skills. Children who struggle with typical academic performance not only suffer their own blows to self-esteem but also may develop mood disorders that are ultimately much more impactful than their initial diagnosis of attentional or learning differences. In addition, their families deal with both internal and external stressors that can result in family dysfunction, parental strife, and parental mood disorders. As therapists or counselors we are often faced with trying to help children or parents learn to cope productively and successfully with the challenge presented by not fitting into a typical mold. In this workshop, Dr. Blurton will describe the more common educational, attentional and behavioral differences and what they mean to children and families, as well as how they are diagnosed. In addition, we will discuss tips for counselors and teachers as well as tips they may want to pass on to children, families and schools.
